More Underwear Stories...or the Lack of

The Washington Post had a story a couple days ago on the racy display window that Victoria's Secret put up in Tysons Corner, a very conservative suburban area of Washington, D.C. Supposedly the mannequins were dressed in black sheer skimpy undergarments or feather-like scraps that could pass as underclothing. Not only that, they were apparently posed provocatively, whether it be lounging, crawling, or adjusting their stiletto heels.

Consumers were heard muttering about Victoria's Secret being "a shop for whores" or one for "slut wear". They were threatening to bring their children underwear-shopping elsewhere. (Of course! Who brings their child to Victoria's Secret for their first BRA??! Are we that label-hungry that we have resorted to this?)

As a woman...and after looking at all the pictures...I fail to see what the entire fuss is. It is actually liberating, in my opinion. It's underwear! Most everyone wears some form of it. It's not like you haven't seen women's underwear before. What you are seeing is a marketing ploy in order to encourage women to spice up their lingerie wardrobe. Yes, it is a bit provocative, but it offers women everywhere the idea that they too, can look and feel just as sexy and alluring in these scraps of fabric. Wearing something that Victoria's Secret offers will make you an attractive vixen similar to the size 0 supermodel ladies. There is an old woman's notion that we choose our lingerie to give ourselves that needed mental boost. We wear g-strings and the like to feel sexy. We wear our granny panties when we need the comfort. What we wear underneath is not the public's business, yet it gives us a thrill to secretly know what we possess underneath our Ann Taylor tailored suit. It gives a mental confidence boost to all of us, in the boardroom, at the social event, and in the bedroom. What Victoria's Secret is simply doing is playing on that...that if we buy those feathers and bells, that we too are stunning.

And if it makes us walk a little taller, be a little bit more aggressive, and talk more confidently, I, for one, think that Victoria's Secret has done its job.
